NIA Announcement

PRE-CONFERENCE REGISTRATION: Registration | AIDS 2024 | International AIDS Society (IAS) (iasociety.org)

Join NIA at AIDS 2024on Sunday, July 21 from 9 AM – 12:30 PM EST or 3:00 – 6:30 PM, Central European Time, for the pre-conference workshop: “Exploring the Intersection of HIV and Aging — A Geroscience Perspective”.

This workshop will explore the translational potential of recent biological findings, including those related to the hallmarks of aging, in developing interventions for individuals living with HIV or at-risk for HIV. Confirmed speakers include: Caroline Sabin, PhD (University College London); Brian Kennedy, PhD (National University of Singapore); and Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD (NIA).

Several biological changes are thought to bring about the progressive loss of function and the onset of frailty and chronic diseases at older ages. Geroscience is based on the observation that aging is the major risk factor for these progressive declines and that interventions targeting these molecular changes may prevent or delay the onset of aging-related diseases. Much of the currently funded research in geroscience is being conducted in people without HIV, and given the increased risk of aging-related comorbidities and associated mortality in PWH, the objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Provide currently known information on the epidemiology of and mechanisms that lead to chronic disease, premature morbidity, functional decline, and geriatric syndromes in PWH;
  • Increase the understanding of how basic mechanisms of aging impact the overall health of PWH; and

Explore interventions that may prevent and slow premature aging in PWH.
